Camping in Rajmachi..
Camping in Rajmachi is a perfect idea especially because of the long trek. Rajmachi Rural Aid and Development Programme (NGO) has 2 dormitories to provide camping accommodation facilities fpr trekkers to Rajmachi in Udhivade village at a nominal charge. (Alcohol is prohibited)
Kondana Caves
There are 8 Buddhist caves of the Hinayana Buddhist tradition near Kondana village near Karjat. The Kondana caves enclose sculptures, vihara and stupas of ancient Buddhist architecture. Although many stupas, front entrance and the floor of the caves were damaged in an earthquake the Chaitya that welcomes you to the rock cut caves remained intact.
Lonavala, sequestered between two major cities Mumbai and Pune, Is a popular get away and a weekend destination. Lonavala sprawl over an approximate area of 38 sq km with some of the most popular forts like Lohagad, waterfalls and lakes. Lonavla an hours drive away from Pune and Mumbai is one of the best spots for a weekend one day trip from Pune especially during monsoons.
The shorter route to Rajmachi starts near Karjat in Kondivade village. From Kondivade village one could take the route to Rajmachi via the Kharvandi village which is the shortest route to Rajmachi or via the Kondana village and visit the ancient Kondana buddhist caves. Kondana route is about 2 kms longer than the Kharvandi route. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach Rajmachi from Kondivade village.
There are many trek routes one can take to Rajmachi and depending on the route taken the trek duration can range from 4 hours to 6 hours. The route from Tungarli near Lonavala is the longest and easiest route to Rajmachi which is about 15 kms long . Enroute Rajmachi on this path is Walvan a picturesque region with many waterfalls dururing monsons, about 8 Kms from Tungarli. It will take about 5.5 hours of hiking to reach Udhewadi the base of Rajmachi fort by this route.
Rajmachi Trek Routes
The Rajmachi trek is a long trek through dense foliage and enroute the trek one would come across many seasonal waterfalls depending on the route taken. All the trek routes converge at Udhivade the base village of Rajmachi. To climb the Rajmachi twin forts of Shrivardhan and Manoranjan it would take another half an hour from Udhivade village. Monsoon treks to Rajmachi is very popular.
