Kashid beach tucked between two rocky hillocks on the Alibaug-Murud road is one of the best beaches near Pune and Mumbai. A long stretch of beach, Kashid stretches along for almost 2 kms! Kashid with waves much higher than other beaches in Alibaug is by far the best beach in this part of the Konkan region and though quite deserted on weekdays, Kashid attracts its fair share of week-end holiday makers.
A trip to Murud - Janjira from Murud 20 Kilometers from Kashid is what can make your Kashid trip truely unforgettable. A 20 minute ferry from Rajpuri jetty will get you to this formidable sea fortress, never ever conquered by an enemy for over 350 years. There are a few majestic cannons, which have their own names, and remind you of the many ships they must have destroyed in wars. You could also visit the janjira caves.
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary
Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary about half an hour drive from Kashid and trek through the jungle trails is a delightful experience. The main attraction of the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is the beautiful Giant Indian Squirrel, but given its shy disposition, catching a glimpse is not an easy prospect. There are over 90 different types of butterflies in Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary.
15 Kms from Kashid on the Alibaug – Roha route near the Salav village is the beautiful 'Birla Mandir'. Atop a hill the Birla mandir has a beautifully carved marble nave and the idol of ‘Ganapati’ is mounted on the nave. The idols of ‘Riddhi and Siddhi’ are placed on either sides of the idol. There are small temples of ‘Radha-Krishna’, ‘Shiv-Parvati’ and ‘Suryadeva’ also here.
Aarti is at 9.00 am and 7.00 pm
About 15 kilometers from Kashid is the Korlai fort and lighthouse. Built by the Portugese the Korlai fort has three inscriptions within the fort. Over one of the inscriptions surmounted by a cross is a coat of arms with a shield, the Portuguese star in the center surrounded by seven castles. The other inscriptions, one over the chief entrance, and one in the chapel, are worn out and unreadable.
Kashid beach is a sandy beach typical of northern Konkan beaches with a thin layer of white sand covering the underlying fine black sand. The one thing that differentiates Kashid beach to the other beaches in Alibag is the waves at Kashid beach with a semblence of Kerala beaches.
