Amboli is an idyllic hillstation near Sawantwadi and is a perfect destination if you are looking for an isolated holiday away from the crowds. Amboli for most parts is isolated but for the Amboli waterfalls which is right by the SH where most of the tourists stop enroute Goa! Amboli has a few view points which affords a view of the Konkan coast on a clear day. The Kavlesad viewpoint also offers magnificent views of the tree canopied valleys.
Madhavgad Fort, Amboli
The Madhavgad Fort built by Sawants is located at a distance of 3 kms from Amboli. The fort offers sweeping views of the surrounding forest and valleys. The Madhavgad Fort though a huge fort in comparison, currently is in a state of ruins. The fort can be reached only from the northern side and extends some of the best bird’s-eye views of the Konkan coast.
Amboli is situated in the southern range of Sahyadri hills, at an altitude of 690 m. Amboli is 25 Kms from Sawantwadi and falls in the main state highway connecting Nipani to Sawantwadi enroute Goa. It is in fact the travelers to Goa who made Amboli comparatively popular because of the 'mandatory' stop that they take at the Amboli water falls to get drenched before heading to the beaches of Goa!
Like any other hillstation Amboli also has some view points however the 'sea view' point makes it the only hill station with that distinction! Mahadevgad point located about 3 kms from the bazar is one of the primary view points in Amboli. Kavlesad Point is lot further ahead but view offered in Kavlesad justifies the distance. There are a few other points like the sunset and Shirgaonkar Point near Amboli.
Hiranyakeshi Temple
Hiranyakeshi temple in Amboli is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The Hiranyakeshi river originates from a cave adjacent to the temple and flows out from the 'Kund'. Hiranyakeshi temple houses a Shivling, Ganapati idol and the Hiranyakeshi Devi idol
